Why Does Fido Chases Its Tail

Dogs are known to have unexplainable behaviors. In spite of man's long years of association with these animals, their odd and inexplicable behaviors are still a mystery. The reasons and explanations behind these odd behaviors are very interesting subjects to dog experts. Dogs have an unexplainable appetite for grass; have the propensity to sniff each others butts. Dog owners are amused at the pet's habit of circling several times before lying down. Pet parents are either amused or irritated at the dog that is continuously chasing the tail .

Dogs are famed for their playful nature. Dog experts theorize that tail chasing which is more common in puppies is due to the fact that puppies believe that the tail is a toy that can be played with and not a body part. The inclination to chase the tail which is common in puppies would eventually decrease as the puppy gets older.

Dogs can deal with the discomfort caused by flies by using the tail as a fly swatter. A sleeping dog pestered by flies and other insects would get up and chase its tail. External parasite infestation will result to the same situation. To ease the itchiness of tail caused by flea bites, the dog would bite the itchy part and in doing so would chase the tail. Intestinal parasites that cause the dog's anal area to itch can be another reason why a dog would continuously chase its tail.

Dogs are social animals - always wanting interaction with the human family. The tail chasing behavior can be the pet's way of getting the attention of the owner. Unwanted and destructive habits are developed by dogs that do not receive the needed attention from its owners. The bored dogs can become an excessive barker, a destructive chewer and also develop the habit to chase its tail.

A neurological concern can be the reason for the dog's inclination to chase the tail. Seizure associated with psychomotor epilepsy can cause compulsive tail chasing of dogs. The habit of chasing the tail is most commonly seen in dogs that have high cholesterol levels. In humans, high levels of cholesterol would cause panic attacks and obsessive compulsive behaviors. In adult dogs, the habit of chasing the tail can be caused by high cholesterol levels.

Dogs have odd behaviors that mystify their human friends. A medical or behavioral concern can be the reason why dogs manifest odd behaviors. Studies on dog behavior may or may not provide answers for this concern but the outcome will not cause humans to love dogs less.

What Is A Rajapalayam Dog

The dog trots gracefully like a thoroughbred horse. The dog would attract attention because the smooth milk white coat, the golden eyes and the pinkish nose really make the dog attractive. This attractive noble looking breed that looks like a smaller version of a Great Dane is a Rajapalayam Dog. This breed has a well muscled and strong boned body. This dog's head and body is covered with a somewhat loose skin that does not form wrinkles and dewlaps. The dog may appear to be rather high and mighty because the head is always carried high.

In its country of origin, the Rajapalayam Dog is also known as Paligar Hound and Paleiyakaran. Breed enthusiasts believed that the Rajapalayam Dog has existed in India since the 17th century. During that time hunting boar is a favorite sport of the aristocracy. The heightened scenting ability, the high prey drive as well as the strength are the reasons why this breed of scenthound is a favored hunting companion of the aristocracy. This Indian scenthound is a formidable hunter of wild boars and other smaller animals. Rajapalayam Dogs are noted to have a vicious temperament. These ferocious dogs were utilized by the Indians as war dogs that fought against the British Cavalry during the 18th century Carnatic Wars.

A Rajapalayam Dog is an outstanding hunter but owners have complained about the dog's tendency to get easily distracted. A Rajapalayam that is trailing a prey would suddenly veer away from the trail to follow another interesting scent. In recent years, these dogs that were originally developed to hunt are now seen in homes performing the roles of watch dogs and family pets. The massive size of the dog would be enough to intimidate an intruder. This dog breed that is wary of strangers would lay its life on the line to protect its family.

This dog forms loyalty only to one man. This dog will only be loyal to one master. The dog will only have eyes for its favorite person and would follow wherever the master goes. This dog though form a legendary bond with the children so that the attention for the master is lessened when the dog is in the company of children. A Rajapalayam Dog has great affection and tolerance for the young members of the family.

This dog breed has low grooming needs and brushing the coat once a week would be enough to maintain its good condition. Rajapalayam Dog owners have to provide the pet with sufficient opportunities to exercise as this is a high energy breed.

The Colored World Of Dogs

Due to a superb ability to see in dark, dogs can hunt at night. Apart from the ultrasensitive nose, a dog's incredible ability to see in the dark are the reasons why dog owners can sleep soundly at night. Excellent night vision allows a dog to see intruders and to unerringly chase them away from the house. As long as a dog is on guarding duty, no intruders can access the home. The dog's eyesight is not par with the excellence of its other senses. A dog's vision is rather poor as compared to human's. For hundreds of years, it is commonly believed that dogs can only see whites and grays. But is this true? Can dogs see color?

Is it possible that our four legged friends are living in a world that is black and white? Or is it true that in a dog's eyes, everything is gray? The belief about the dog's inability to see colors that has existed for hundreds of years was changed when studies have proven that dogs can see colors. However, man's best friends don't see colors like we humans do. A dog's scale in distinguishing colors is limited. It is quite unfortunate that dogs cannot see all the colors of the rainbow.

Similar to humans, dogs' eyes have cone photoreceptor cells. These are special cells that catch the light and control color perception. Dogs though only have 2 cone types while humans have three. These three special cells enable humans to have 100% ability to distinguish colors and because dogs only have two their color perception is only about 20%.

Dogs are color blind because they cannot distinguish the colors red, orange, green and purple. Because of this disability, dogs' color vision is poor as compared to human's. In spite of the inferior ability to distinguish colors, dogs can see the subtle change in shades of blue and violet, a feat that humans cannot do. Humans cannot distinguish the subtle change in shades of the colors blue and violet because of the yellow pigmentation in the eyes that blocks short wavelengths decreases the human eyes' sensitivity to blue and violet lights.

Dogs may have a poor ability to distinguish colors but this disability is not that important to the dog's survival. A dog owner may not take the trouble of looking for the a red or green toy or for an orange blanket as the dog would not see these brilliant colors anyway. The dog may have a rather inferior ability to see colors but this ability is fully compensated by its other sensitive senses. Dogs have superior night vision and peripheral vision. These are more important abilities as they are necessary in the dog's survival.

Dog Breed: Canadian Pointer

The Canadian Pointer is described as a medium sized dog with a powerfully built body that is covered with a 1 ½ inch coarse coat. Despite the name, this breed that belongs to the HPR (hunting, pointing and retrieving) group was actually developed in United States and not in Canada. This gundog that is utilized to hunt, point, and retrieve foxes, rabbits and other upland small game was the result of a crossing Labrador Retrievers, English Pointers and Portuguese Pointers in 1880s.

Measured at the withers, the Canadian Pointer stands about 30 inches and weighs from 48 to 60 pounds. Also known as Adirondak Pointing Dog, a Canadian Pointer closely resembles its ancestors thus it is often mistaken for an English Pointer. A point of distinction between the two breeds is the shorter ears and the thicker coat of the Canadian Pointer. The thick coats of Canadian Pointers allows these dogs to hunt in the very cold temperatures of the mountains. Coat color combination of this breed range from light brown and white, dark brown and white and black and white.

Although the Canadian Pointer was specifically developed to be a hunter, this dog breed does not have the agility of other HPR breeds. Canadian Pointers are not as nimble as the English Pointer because the hind quarters and the front quarters somewhat limit the dog's stance. Canadian Pointers though are very healthy dogs and known to have a life expectancy of about 15 years.

This breed has a hunting, pointing and retrieving ancestry but it also the temperament most wanted in a family companion. Due to this breeds eagerness to please personality, Canadian Pointers are usually hunted on weekends and on weekdays, these dogs make ideal family companions. Intelligent and obedient by nature, the dog trains easily. Aside from the ease of housebreaking, this dog easily learns tricks as well. Grooming will not be a problem either as a Canadian Pointer has a low maintenance coat.

A Canadian Pointer has a sensitive scenting ability. This breed can be a dependable guard dog as it has a well developed instinct to protect the family. This is not a ferocious breed, this dog is noted to have a calm temperament but it does not mean that the dog would not move with alacrity if the family is threatened. This breed is first and foremost a hunter but it has adapted to the less active life of a home companion. This even tempered dog makes a good family pet as it can be the gentle and tolerant playmate of the kids.

Yuck - Fido Licked My Face Again

Dogs are known to have a loving characteristics. This is one of the reasons why dogs are branded as man's best friends. Dogs also have the tendency to follow their masters around thus they were given the name Velcro animals. It is common for dog owners to kiss and hug their pets. To reciprocate the affection, dogs would shower the face of the master with wet kisses.

Is your dog a face licker too? Some pet parent would not mind the pet's licking habit. Dogs are known to drink from the toilet bowl and has the habit of eating feces thus owners that are licked by the pet on the face will naturally be disgusted. Whether the owner is disgusted or not by the pet's habit it would still be necessary to understand why the dog likes licking faces.

The dog that is licking and washing your face with its saliva is simply showing you its affection. Licking is a natural behavior learned by dogs from their mother. Mother dogs would lick newborn puppies to remove the afterbirth and also to stimulate circulation so that the pups would breathe easily. The mother dog's habit of licking the puppies strengthens the bond between the dam and the puppies. A dog considers the owners as its family. Licking the face is therefore done by the pet as a sign of affection and appreciation for the care given by the human family.

Dog behaviorists believe that when the dog licks the master's face, it is showing deference and submission. Dogs are pack oriented. Even in the wild, the dominant dog is respected and treated as the head of the pack. Licking the face of the leader of the pack is done by dogs lower in rank to show submission. Dogs consider the owner and the other family members as higher in rank thus the pet will lick the face to show submission.

Dog owners often treat the dog as the baby of the family and as such the licking of the pet will be ignored. However, the licking can be an unsanitary habit given the dog's habit of raiding the trash and eating feces. It would be very necessary to curb the dog's face-licking habit if there are children in the family. Dogs and children often falls in love at first sight and because of the affection, the kid would not mind a face-licking pet. Allowing dogs to lick a kid's face is dangerous because of the bacteria in the dog's mouth that can be transmitted to the kid..

English White Terrier - An Extinct Breed

Terriers, also known as earth dogs have existed in Great Britain as early as the 18th century. These dogs were lumped together under the terrier umbrella. These small dogs have existed for years without being formally categorized into distinct breeds. The dogs were only categorized according to appearance and place of origin.

About the middle of the 1800s, the popularity of dogs shows made a significant change in the existence of these dogs. Dog owners have started "creating" new breeds from the already existing types of terriers. The new breeds were introduced complete with fictitious histories to attract the attention of dog lovers. The English White Terrier is one of the dog types that were named and introduced as a new breed.

The English White Terrier is a small dog weighing about 12 to 20 lbs. The smooth white coat, the flat skull on the wedge shaped head as well as the muzzle that tapers to the black nose distinguishes this terrier from other breeds of terriers. Bright black eyes are oval in shape and set fairly close. It has been the custom of English White Terrier owners to crop the perfectly erect ears of the dog. An English White Terrier's tail is moderate in length, thick at the base and tapers to a point.

It is rather unfortunate that the English White Terrier also known as Old English Terrier is now an extinct breed. Terriers are generally called earth dogs because of their propensity to follow the prey underground. These dexterous dogs will go after foxes, vermin and other small animals to their underground den. An English White Terrier is not capable of this feat because this breed is known to have a weak and fragile constitution. This breed therefore is not an ideal hunting companion. This breed though has excelled in the show ring.

English White Terriers are handicapped by their genetic disorder of deafness that hinders them from being good hunters and working dogs. English White Terriers though make good lap dogs. These affectionate dogs would love being hugged and cuddled. The genetic disorder as well as the lack of utilization has caused the extinction of this breed. The English White Terrier is one of the breeds that have gone extinct but this breed has left dog lovers an important legacy. The English White Terrier is the forebear of several terrier breeds existing today. The Fox Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier and the Sealyham Terrier have English White Terrier blood in their veins.
