What is a hermit crab? Well, hermit crabs are unusual pets for unusual people, maybe someone like you. Seriously, according to Wikipedia, these crabs are decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea. Actually, they are not that closely related to crabs. Sort of, in human terms, in-laws or distant relatives but they walk funny, too, sideways. They are commonly seen in the intertidal zone, for example, in tide pools. These crabs have the habit of abandoning their own shell overtime and will find a larger shell. This is why they are called “hermit crabs” and can you imagine that a lot of people want to have hermit crabs pet. Honestly speaking, I'm unusual.
Yes, I have my own hermit crabs right here at home. I discovered them when I went to this party of a friend of mine whom I haven't seen for a long time. Naturally, we spend a lot of hours talking in their living room and just right across from where we are sitting, he has this big aquarium with lots of fishes. I guess I could also say that I also got lots of those fishes that's why, the very thing that really caught my full attention are his hermit crabs. These animals are very destinctive in the wild. These little crustaceans are quite different from many other animals. One of the main differences is the fact that he uses his shell as his home. Another is that he was born in the ocean. They have the ability to live out of the water for several months before they will eventually crawl back to the shore to take a dip in the water to replenish their need.
The supplies and food that you need is probably less than you think. One of the most important things to do when you are buying a hermit crab is to consider buying more than one. Hermit crabs are actually "happy social crabs". Although there name may imply that they are antisocial they actually are not. You will know what I mean once you start interacting with your new pet friends. When you get out to buy your crab make sure that you buy more than one.
Unfortunately Hermit Crabs are not cheaper by the dozen but trust me they will be much happier when you collect them that way. I know of many hermit crab owners who really do buy them by the dozen. You will find them together more then you will find them alone in their natural habitat.
