This attractive noble looking breed that looks like a smaller version of a Great Dane is a Rajapalayam Dog. This breed has a well muscled and strong boned body. This dog's head and body is covered with a somewhat loose skin that does not form wrinkles and dewlaps. The dog may appear to be rather high and mighty because the head is always carried high.
In its country of origin, the Rajapalayam Dog is also known as Paligar Hound and Paleiyakaran. Breed enthusiasts believed that the Rajapalayam Dog has existed in India since the 17th century. During that time hunting boar is a favorite sport of the aristocracy. The heightened scenting ability, the high prey drive as well as the strength are the reasons why this breed of scenthound is a favored hunting companion of the aristocracy. This Indian scenthound is a formidable hunter of wild boars and other smaller animals. Rajapalayam Dogs are noted to have a vicious temperament. These ferocious dogs were utilized by the Indians as war dogs that fought against the British Cavalry during the 18th century Carnatic Wars.
