Akbash Dog - A One Of A Kind LGD
A breed of white livestock guarding dog in Turkey is called Akbash Dog because "akbash" means white head. The Akbash Dog is one of the two native dogs of Turkey. The lean body that is covered by the pristine white double coat gives this breed of LGD a magnificent appearance. The pristine white coat is the benchmark of this Turkish breed. This Turkish breed of LGD comes in two coat varieties -a medium length smooth coat and a long an wavy coat that gives the dog a lion-like appearance because of the ruff formed on the neck.
Akbash Dogs are natural guarding dogs as even with very minimal training, the dogs would know immediately if the situations concerning the sheep and goats they are guarding is safe or poses a threat to the animals. Akbash Dogs would bite animals that break away animals to get them back to the flock but their bites would not cause the animals serious harm. To perform its duties of guarding livestock efficiently, an Akbash Dog would usually find a spot where it can have a good view of the animals it is guarding. Akbash Dogs are working dogs thus the breed would thrive if their abilities are utilized.
Akbash Dogs are efficient LGDs because they have the inherent abilities to protect animals. These livestock guardians would not wait for the command of the master as they will respond immediately in emergency situations. Akbash Dogs are efficient livestock guarding dogs but they also have the qualities most wanted in companion dogs.
Akbash Dogs make wonderful companions because these are intelligent, loyal and very protective dogs. It is typical for these dogs to form a strong bond with their owners. These qualities made these dogs ideal home companions. This is not an aggressive breed but it can be depended to protect the family.
Akbash Dogs are low maintenance dogs as this breed is naturally clean. In spite of the large size, Akbash Dogs are not very active. These dogs are accustomed to lying down all day while guarding the animals. Unlike older dogs that would have low activity requirements, young dogs would benefit from being given opportunities to exercise. Exercise would be important for the physical development of a young dog thus it has to be allowed to play unrestricted by a leash. The play area of the dog though has to be well secured with a fence because these dogs love to wander.
